After standing on a smart scale, people often ask, “How do you lose visceral fat?”

Unlike subcutaneous fat, (most fat, stored underneath the skin)  Visceral fat, sometimes called 'hidden' fat, is stored deep inside your abdomen, wrapped around your vital organs, including the liver and heart.  So, How much visceral fat is normal?  And is visceral fat hard to lose?

The main function of the visceral fat is protection of your internal organs. Excess visceral fat, the higher the amount a person stores, the more at risk they are for certain health complications. These may include, type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, heart disease, raised blood pressure and stroke, to mention a few.

So can you lose visceral fat? Generally, you can avoid high levels of visceral fat by making positive changes, through sensible nutrition solutions and a healthy eating plan. You can further achieve your health goals by increasing your amount of exercise, and lowering stress levels. An often-overlooked way to reduce your stress levels and thus your cortisol is by practicing good sleep hygiene.
